Wildcats Christmas in July 2008

In what seems to have now become a tradition, any semblance of biker sanity is chucked out of the window whilst selecting a venue for the Wildcats Christmas Party.

This years announcement that the final destination was the Warrumbungles in the middle of winter, had the manufacturers of winter apparel for bikers rubbing their hands with glee at the potential upsurge of sales to the Wildcats, and, no doubt all the hospitals en-route were on a red alert standby ready for potential cases of severe hypothermia and frostbite, however, wrapped up in enough clothing to give the Michelin Man a run for his money and with the thought, that, ‘if it was easy, everyone would be doing it’ the Hunter Valley contingent headed west. Around mid afternoon Friday saw us arriving at the Warrumbungles Holiday Camp, it’s situated a few klicks out of Coonabarabran, and was far enough from civilisation to allow for a bit of hair letting down without worrying about what the neighbours thought, although, given how cold it had been for the ride over there, I personally reckon it’s biggest asset was the massive fireplace filled with a couple of tree trunks that were throwing out enough heat to singe the feathers off low flying geese heading north for winter, it only took about thirty seconds standing in front of the fireplace to defrost the entire body and then you had to retreat about five metres to avoid cooking, fellow Wildcat, Mond, being local to the area, had done a top job organising the weekend, and would have gone close to challenging Brazil with the amount of deforestation he had done supplying logs for the fire.

The agenda for Friday night was a damn good feed at the very biker friendly Coonabarabran Hotel, and their hospitality certainly set the mood for the rest of the weekend.

Saturday morning dawned with a brisk minus six degrees, but, it did manage to slowly get into the positive figures by the time we departed for the Poker Run, mind you, there was still ice at the observatory when we arrived there. A meandering ride collecting more cards at pubs along the way finally had us back at the Resort by late afternoon and lined up thawing out in front of the fire, Saturdays meal of roast beef went down well, as did the boxes of prime quality oysters and prawns especially brought up from the South Coast by AJ and Mellow.

With just about everyone stuffed to the gills with food and grog it was then time for the presentation of appropriate trophies to deserving members for all their indiscretions of the previous year, needless to say, once again they all seemed to go to the right people, and, on announcement of each winner, there was no doubt a few quiet sighs of relief from the non recipients as they realised they had not had their foibles forever etched on the trophies. Having got the serious business finished, if there is such a thing with the Wildcats, it was then time to uphold the time honoured tradition of party till you drop, Kaz and I finally hit the sack early Sunday morning, leaving the hard core party goers to see the night out.

All up, another very successful Christmas in July, with a big vote of thanks going to Mond for his huge effort in organising the venue, also to AJ and Mellow for the well appreciated seafood, Shadow, Mellow and Cel for sharing their photo's and of course, all the behind the scenes members who put in their time, and, last but not least, all the members who attended and made it the weekend that it was.
