Well...nice to see everyone passionate about our flag...the dreaded Aussie Apathy appears to have missed us...good!...and as to the flag...well my 2 bobs worth...

The flag we have now represents where we came from...although we don't consider ourselves British..however, no getting away from it...the first white folk to settle on these shores hailed from Great Britain, convicts, soldiers etc...this is our history and our flag reflects this, two world wars, the Korean War and Vietnam were all fought  under this flag and a lot of true blue Aussie's died under this flag...and we have the lifestyle we love because of the sacrifice of these men and women...change the flag to make it more Australian...fine...but keep what we have now and add to it...

And as for immigrants...well...welcome to Australia, we have a lot to offer you...learn our ways and our language, and remember, you chose to find safety and make a new life in a predominantly christian country, where your religion may be a minority, we do have freedom of religion but don't push the envelope, you can still assimilate and keep your culture, but at the end of the day if you don't like the way we do things...Leave!

Well put Kaz 100%.. Wink Wink..Duds we have what we have m8 and Kaz said what I probly should have said, read the link Shadow posted and it's in respective aint it...I don't give 2 fucks what New Zealand or other countries have cause they aint Australia. thats where I live and thats where my family have fought an died to protect, as a young bloke I used to think get rid of the Union Jack we aint poms but after that last debarkle about the flag an seeing the SHIT people wanted instead no thanks and now I'm older wiser and much more handsome I truly understand what we have we have FUCKEN earned the right to keep... Smiley

If and ONLY IF we have a refferendum and we have to change it then "TO ME" ONLY THE SOUTHERN CROSS could be chosen again "Eureka Stockade" has been a flag men fought under against establishment and taxes I belive, and all in Australia and I'm sure many would love to have that flag flow high and proud as Australias flag...

If we risk a refferendum undecided undecided we could end up with some peice of shit flag  embarrassed embarrassed that we may well be ashamed to say is ours do we risk it????  Cool Cool anyway my lips are sealed Im sure Iv'e said too much already.. lips sealed lips sealed.
... Smiley Cool Smiley

ok....good point
I wanna new flag

IF , AND ONLY ' IF ' , THERE IS NO OTHER OPTION AND CHANGE IS PRONOUNCED ..............

                                                  " THE EUREKA FLAG "

' WHEN INJUSTICE BECOMES LAW --- RESISTANCE BECOMES DUTY '

               --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Eureka flag is believed to have been designed by a Canadian gold miner by the name of " Lieutenant " Ross during the Eureka Stockade uprising in Ballarat , Victoria - Australia in the year 1854.

The flag's five stars represent the Southern Cross and the white cross joining the stars represents unity in defiance. The blue background represents the shirt colours worn by the diggers ( miners ) rather than represent the sky as was originally thought.

The flag above , the Eureka Flag , is the design that was torn down by police constable John King on the morning of the digger's uprising --

                                              Sunday Dec 3rd 1854.

The " Eureka Stockade " uprising was a revolt by gold miners ( diggers ) against petty officialdom and harassment by a corrupt police force , who would often ask miners to show there licences several times a day . The miners objected to holding licences and resented paying the exorbitant fees to hold same.

Led by an elected Sgt at Arms , Peter Lalor ( who later became a Federal Government minister ) , the Eureka revolt was a spectacular failure in a military sense. The revolt had it's roots in the killing of a miner , James Scobie .

An inquest was held and despite the evidence of miners , no conclusion was made about who had been responsible for Scobie's death ( by shooting ). Those miners who pressed for the arrest of the shooter were taken into custody .

Miners then took the law into their own hands . Revenge was taken and the shooter's home and other property was burned to the ground . The ' culprits ' were imprisoned by the police without trial and the situation in the gold fields became explosive . Unequal laws and unequal rights caused much discontent.

Peter Lalor lead the miners in war against the police and they built a stockade at the goldfields so as to defy the authorities .

The Eureka flag then appeared . -----  ( refer ' When injustice becomes ---- ' )

Many rebels along with many of the ' King's men ' were killed in the bloody battle to follow . Reinforced police numbers from far and wide eventually destroyed the stockade .

So is the story of the ' Eureka ' flag and it's cause.

In Australia today , the flag is worn by many of our bike fraternity signifying the same defiance against the injustices that prevail within the ' authority ' .

Why should we fly the Union Jack.....England still calls us convicts......Yes I know, wars were fought, and men died for this flag, but times are a changin, move on, it's about time we had our own identity.......I say YES to a new flag;

IMHO...Given Australia's multicultural make up, we have a net gain of one international migrant every 1 minute and 51 seconds, and the short sightedness of our politicians who can only see as far as the next election... do you really think that the Eureka Flag would even be a choice in a referendum?  The Eureka flag, the very symbol of us ordinary people sticking it to the establishment!

We'll more likely get some "never leave their desk" computer geeks symbolising the multicultural nature of our society or some such PC crap...I'll bet ya a beer!

Ya probly right there Kaz - was worth the thought by a few as in my case, 2nd option - we can always try. Still prefer what we have of course and can't be swayed on that. No Political motivations here , just the way ( I think ) it should remain. ........  Wink Cool Wink
